During the mid-nineties heyday of trip-hop, DJs Krush and Shadow were sort of the alpha and omega of the genre;
  1. DJ Krush is not only able to drive the direction and tempo, but he's also quite adept at creating mood-often mixing up somber, downtempo collages that glide with an underwater grace. His uptempo work is direct, solidly propelled by someone who knows how to handle bass and breaks.

Although, I've checked out a couple of his albums and really enjoyed it, I think I need to take another look at this talented DJ. Only the Strong Survive is one of only a handful I listen to of his on a regular basis. CL Smooth's, featured MC on the track low-toned, voice glides soulfully over Krush's jazz instrumentals.

Dj krush song 2Endtroducing... remain seminal releases and are obvious sources of inspiration/predecessors for the likes of everyone from RJD2 to Zero 7. Since then, of course, this particular brand of beatmaking has proliferated in too many different ways to keep count, but Krush persevered through more than a decade of rip-offs and imitations by continuing to develop his core aesthetic - namely, to push the idea of breakbeats in new, offbeat directions. So with the release of Stepping Stones: The Self-Remixed Best, Krush comes full circle, paying homage to years of innovation and eccentricity while offering a selection of some of his best material in a format that even longtime listeners will find invigorating.
On September 30, 2006, Krush appeared in Los Angeles at the Knitting Factory, and the show served as a great introduction to his idiosyncratic approach to making music: rather than offering individual tunes, hermetically-sealed and carefully arranged in some order resembling the chronology of his career, he layered one set of breakbeats over the next, creating a continuous exploration of the percussive and melodic elements that he has manipulated since his 1994 release Strictly Turntablized. This structure is vaguely duplicated on Stepping Stones, where once-familiar songs have been turned upside down and inside out while retaining their essential tone and creative essence. The only major difference, in fact, is his deliberate and remarkably effective separation of vocal and instrumental tracks, which he divides into two discs titled 'Lyricism' and 'Soundscapes.'
Regardless which disc one prefers, there's plenty of old and new appeal to be found amidst each set's selections: the elegant classicism of 'Stormy Cloud,' which features some brilliant, jazzy piano riffs; the futuristic, tribal reinvention of 'Only the Strong Survive,' which was remixed countless times during its original release but still feels completely new here; the dodgy polyrhythms and reverberating melodies of 'Meiso;' and the reliable, chugging simplicity of 'Kemuri,' now sliced up with some expert turntablism and enough ambience to fill a dozen cocktail lounges.
Ultimately, the great strength of this collection is that it manages to properly chronicle Krush's eclectic career and simultaneously celebrate it in the way he deserves. By releasing a greatest hits-as-remix project, Krush proves that he will continue to remain relevant years from now, when his most famous recordings have become boilerplate classics and his obtuse digressions are finally understood and fully appreciated. For longtime fans or newcomers to his unique brand of beat-mining, Stepping Stones qualifies as the best greatest hits by an artist you may never have heard - and more importantly, ensures that's never a problem again.
