GarminGarmin has been knocking out golf GPS watches before the phrase ‘wearable tech’ even existed, and its latest model – the Approach S60 – looks like being the heaviest hitting (longest driving?) wrist-based golf tech so far.
With Garmin, you’ve already got a vast array of dedicated golf watches to choose from, as well as activity watches with its impressive on-course golf technology built in – but the Approach S60 takes a somewhat different, er, approach by being a golf watch front and centre, with some activity tracking and sports training modes in the background. It’s like a scaled-down Garmin Fenix 5 in smart golf trousers.
The Fenix 5 comparisons are apt – it looks just like Garmin’s flagship sports watch and even boasts the same 1.2-inch, 240 x 240 panel, for its display. The S60 is capable of 10 hours of battery life for golfing – easily enough for a couple of rounds in one day; and up to 10 days in watch mode with activity tracking.
As well as the usual golf features you’d expect from a Garmin golf watch – with details for over 40,000 courses around the world – there are a few new skills built in. PlaysLike takes elevation into account, helping you select the correct club for your distance to the pin; SwingTempo and TempoTraining will help to improve your upswing and downswing posture and tempo; and AutoShot tracks shots around the course, prompting you to tag them with a club and offering you the chance to review them afterwards.
The S60 also taps into Garmin’s new dedicated Golf app, with social-aspects-aplenty. There’s weekly leaderboards, the ability to compete against friends and fellow golfers; viewing other players’ rank, score, handicap and more. The app can also be used for live scoring on the course and scores entered on the S60 will automatically sync to the app for instant updates.
As well as the huge plethora of golf features, the Approach S60 also tracks steps, calorie, distance travelled and sleep off of the course and the GPS radio means it can be used as your multisport watch too – with run, swim and cycle modes all on board.
The Garmin Approach S60 going to cost from $399.99 when it goes on sale in June. A premium version with a scratch-resistant ceramic bezel and black leather band will also be available for $100 more.
